I could have used a walk on the mountain today (verse)

I could have used a walk on the mountain today.

Down the stairs from my office, through the great room comprising

the living room, dining room and kitchen,

past the great black woodburning cookstove,

through the mud room door, then the front door,

into the wild

Up the steep grade just steps from the porch I would stride,

my 22 rifle in hand for company,

only good for frightening ground squirrels now scarce with Fall

I would walk to the top of the rise,

by a lone pine and a barbwire fence, pausing here

I would look down upon our house's blue tin roof

with smoking stove pipe

to the farm in the valley below, to the Columbia River beyond,

the Kettle Mountains a blue line in the future

I would stand in silence but for the wind

and be still with the world before me

I could have used a walk on the mountain today.
